I think that the greatest battle ever was Stalingrad. the battle of stalingrad took the lives of so many. It saw the distruction of the entire german Sixth army after encirclement in "Der Kessel" and the lives of Thousands russian many of whom were women and children who died in their homes or trying to board boats across the volga. Vasilli Chukov lost 18 out of 20,000 troops from his infantry division and never gave a single inch of ground.
The Russian Snipers who referred to the number of germans killed as sticks broken took a fearful toll on German officers and men, they didnt not kill vast numbers of germans but they always killed the highest ranking soldiers there were and and army without leadership leads to chaos and disorder.
Inside the kessel (the german sixth army encircled by russians) thousands of men starved to death because their supplies were cut off and they had no winter clothing. Hitler would not authorise Manstein to make a breakthrough attempt, so they starevd and froze, the soldier tooks to shooting themselves in the stomach to get casevaced and they used to do it through loaves of bread so there were no powder burns (would you shoot yourself knowing medical attention may be up to two weeks away?).
My conclusion being that this battle spanned over more than a year and took the lives of thousands, to me it was the turning point in the war, not the dday landings if the Germans had captured the rest of Asia i believe the world would be a very different place today

to all those who died trying to save their country

ps if anyone is wondering why i just spent so long on a post its because i just finished reading enemy at the gates again and it still amazes me what happend in the grim streets of Stalingrad in 1942

Yeah most germans were forced to fight.

I respect the russians for even trying to fight in stalingrad.

*salutes all who died*

I dont know if it is the greatest battle, but for me the most impressive one was the battle at Arnhem also called the Stalingrad from the west. it just amazes me how hard the british fought and held the bridge for almost 7 days when they were supposed to hold it for only 2.

Just saying we are all going to die, so we are in the same position.

I thought the battle started in early Septembet and ended in Early January, and was only 4.5 months, not a year.

Many Germans were cruel and deserved to die, but a lot of them wasn´t and deserves respect.

Into the allied side there were those wicked guys too... and in the Russian and british...

War sux anyways. War was made of fools for fools.

We should be more peacefull with each other.
But even here in this forum some people show their side racist and agressive.

Bah! #### the war.

Sorry my english, but I guess you all understand what I´m trying to say!

i would have hated to be a russian soilder, because (i was told) that new russian soldiers on their way into the area of a battle were ordered to kill any russians who tried to retreat.

so they had the germans on one side and themselves on the other.

Well, how about the battle Destruction of Army Group Center? That was an entire Army Group, not just one Army like in Stalingrad.

It's true. In CoD(Call Of Duty) single-player, the first russian mission, the river(can't remember the name >.<) where all the boats cross, there's like 20 guys in your boat. One dude gets scared by the german fighter planes and tries to jump out, but the Officers shoot him in the back with PPSh`s :(

At Stalingrad, when it was time for the Soviet Soldiers to cross the river, their weapons went in one boat, most of their clothes in another, and them in a third, so as not to lose it all in the crossing. Later on in the battle the Soviets had managed to build foot bridges across the river out of wood a few inches below the level of the water. At night the troops would run across, and more than a few fell in and drowned.

On a brighter note .... well I can't think of anything. :(

Stalingrad was a misstake, it wasnt even the real goal of the 6th army, but the oildfileds where... and suddenley some fool changes the objectives cause he dosnt know better and we all know the tragic results of that...

bless all unfortunate ppl that was there. what a waste... :(

I'm glad to see that some of the more intellegent members of the forum are posting in my topic :)
it's nice to talk about serious things once in a while.
yeah the underwater bridges were underwater so the germans didnt see or bomb them.
