I run it with WINE since I got tired of all the hassle with the native linux clients

Yes me too :p
But we can't promote the game in Linux community if it isn't native...

Yea, I got lazy and just ran the Windows binary on WINE too. But if someone gets ambitious and makes a comprehensive linux release with maybe an automated script or two to make the process less painful we could promote DDay to the linux game community. Linux games typically don't have the cutting edge graphics and polish that the new Windows have so we'd be more competitive and maybe attract some more new blood.

It's basically the Windows version. All you need is a Linux Quake 2 binary (like quake2.exe)
The DLL file is server only, so you can at least play the game but not host a server.

And "luckily" Dirk's server is a linux server, so he could provide you with the game DLL (.so) if the user wants to create a server :)

But I've given up on finding a client :)

Wouldn't it be better to compile it?

Simple answer: yes. Although if you have the right libraries you can use someone else's.
