Well we got a bunch of maps to start them with. Working on shaders and using EGL to make it look better. If that is needed.

well there's 3 days of data on there. I think we can conclude that no one finds this site except people specifically looking for it.

I could have sworn I put in some meta tags on the main site like "free ww2 game quake 2 dday" and things like that a while back, but I don't see them there.

everything is custom PHP by Afrow, except the news posts are mirrored from the forum itself. I'm willing to try something new though.

I am just responding to the idea of making things better and more modern, and that we have been working on that.

Post Re: The DDay web site
alright, now i understand what you mean

@faf: i wish all our clients were so easy ;)

Perhaps i can do a proposal how it could be. If the forum (PHPBB) is seperated fysically from the homepage life is a lot easier (the same way it is now btw).

A suggestion would be

technique:
- joomla or modified wordpress for CMS for the homepage with all old content (optimized)
- update the PHPBB forum from 3.0.4 to 3.0.7 and add some additional seo-plugins and other optimalisations to make it more attractive
- SEO optimized (not only metatags but everything). Wordpress (and i bet joomla too) comes with a lot of goodies onboard or via plugin.

design:
- personally I think the 'old fashioned' design suits DDAY:NMDY :) Upgrading it to flashy 2.0 design is not quake2 dday if you ask me. A good style is the style of Day of Defeat: Source from Valve. Classic, WW2 kind of style but still up to date. Example. I love the old red, old sand colours. But for us it would be the unique old aquagreenish / sand perhaps? I think you all agree it sould be not to breaking from the current style to be recognizable and in style with the game and it's public.
- what I really like is the kind of table view you see in a lot of games loading screens. A wooden table with some WW2 props on it. This for a background of the site. Example here: http://www.fellinger.nl (not me)

content & conversion:
- I can make content en conversion buttons and / or make a list of what we need. That's where you guys come in. I have already a list with current content and interesting links.

Bottomline: I think it's smart to keep as much content and structure as possible for a lot of reasons ;)

So what do you say? Shall i make a proposal?

Post Re: The DDay web site
ok, I installed Joomla but... It looks like it would be a ton of work moving everything over to a new system and getting the template set up and all. It looks really nice and all, but I don't see how the benefits of using it would be worth the time it would take moving everything over. Especially since I don't plan on adding a lot of new content to the site really. Plus I like how the news on the current site is pulled from the forum. If I had to start over I'd use that, but it seems to be too much work. Maybe you can convince me to do it though... I can still change the design around on the front page, but preferably not with that.

Great effort you are giving us, Guerilla. Thx.
Fafner is just being honest. He doesn't have the time or will to do a full change over. He's realistic and isn't afraid to say that. :)
How about do these awesome tweaks to the current site... Then do a rabid campaign of hand spamming the new installer and these urls on all the hot sites' forums, etc. Keeping to sites with relative content, of course, so you aren't actually considered a spammer.
I launched one of these assaults a few years ago and those posts still come up rather quickly in searches. I could go back and update all those posts and hit other forums and the like, too.
piggy back.

Post Re: The DDay web site
yeah, I have been thinking about the issue redesign vs new install after reading fafners post last night too and I think you are right. Although Joomla would open a world of options the time it will take to seemless integrate all former options into it would be a hell of a job.

So lets go for the tweaking of the custum cms and forums.

Is the design of the cms seperated of the code and content (whats in the name)?

edit: i found out almost all styles are defined in (external) css. That is great news. Site structure is in tables but that shouldnt be a big hassle.

I know something of Joomla and stuff, also I'm spanish that can speak english (as you can see). Joomla can work with this forum, or at least I think so, I've always done it with SMF forum. You just need a "bridge" module/component.
So forum will still the same, all you need is a good theme, add some links, menu, a download module...

I think I said it sometimes, there's also a component called LGSL (Live Game Server List) witch with a list of IP's, and a server that supports sockets you can see servers just with the browser.

As I said, I'm spanish, if you want me to translate anything, I'm available.

still alive!

had some very very busy weeks and temperatures are very nasty here at the moment and besides my attic realy turns into a sauna so not that appealing to spend much time at the pc there.

@shrewd I know a lot on both joomla and wordpress (I even wrote a course book voor Mambo, the predecessor of Joomla) but I think we/they decided we stick with the current system for now and only do tweaking, some design and updates.

I did not make a lot of progression lately but what i did manage was a running version of Quake2 on my macbook. Now I am trying to make dday to work (any hints welcome).

keep you/me posted!

edit: btw i checked the stats and saw an significant increase at 5 july. Some further investigation brought me here:
http://www.dodszene.net/index.php?site= ... &type=DESC
This guy is mentioning our game and is driving 103 unique visitors in one day. That's about 200% of a normal day :)
A simple forum post on a DoD forum in germany. Let alone if we did it on purpose ;)

Dirk, I have the website in my backup folders.
This guy is taking too long, it'll be slightly outdated, but not much was added 'lately'

Can I upload it somewhere?
